File Download Troubleshooting Tips

Can I download to a floppy?

No. The majority of files available for download are simply larger than will fit onto a floppy diskette. In general, downloading directly to a floppy diskette is ill-advised, since it is considerably less reliable than a hard drive.

Are the files available via FTP?

Yes, all files are available anonymously from KIC's FTP server at ftp.kicthermal.com/pub, and using an ftp client to download the files is the most reliable method. The files listed on the web page index point to the files located on our FTP server. Please see Download does not start and I get an error message if you are experiencing problems trying to access the files via FTP.

Download starts but does not complete

Verify that you have sufficient free disk space to accommodate the file(s) you are downloading.

The majority of aborted or incomplete downloads are the result of communication break-downs (time-outs), generally caused by data congestion (bottleneck) at one or more of the hosts in your internet connection path. This is an unfortunate but inherent side effect of data communications in general.

Often, all that is required and all that can be done is to restart the download and it will complete. Depending upon the software you are using to download the file, you may be able to resume from where it aborted. If you are experiencing persistent bottlenecks and time-outs, you may wish to try your download at a different time, possibly during "off-peak hours" if you are using dial-up access through an Internet Service Provider.

If you are downloading using a web browser, you may wish to use an ftp client and download the files directly from our ftp server. Please see the following questions for more information.

Download does not start and I get an error message

Using a Gateway: If you are accessing the internet through a Proxy gateway or other similar security firewall--whether using a web client or an ftp client--you will experience problems if your client is not properly configured. This is most often the case when accessing the internet through a company network. Please contact your Systems Administrator to determine whether or not you have FTP capabilities and what settings you should be using. Generally speaking, personal accounts with dial-up access through an Internet Service Provider do not go through a proxy gateway and should not encounter this problem.

Using a web client: If you are accessing the files from our web page or directly from our ftp server using a web browser, and you are unable to immediately connect using the hyperlink, you may need to configure your web client's ftp and/or gateway parameters. Please contact your Systems Administrator or refer to your web client's on-line documentation for details.

Using an ftp client: If you are accessing our ftp server directly using an ftp client, you should login as anonymous and use your email address as the password. Please contact your Systems Administrator or refer to your ftp client's on-line documentation for details.

Reverse DNS Lookup: A somewhat unfortunate and periodic problem that we have seen with certain users is improperly configured "Reverse DNS Lookup" at the host providing their access to the internet. This problem has been encountered with corporate internet access as well as personal dial-up ISP connections. "Reverse DNS Lookup" is a configuration option of the host computer providing access to the internet, and is not something that an end-user can configure or control. This phrase will have meaning to your Systems Administrator or ISP Customer Support Rep, and their assistance is required to investigate and resolve this problem.
