KIC Press Release April 11, 2000 - KIC‘s New Navigator Automates Profiling Process

(San Diego, CA -- April 11, 2000) : KIC Thermal Profiling introduces the KIC Navigator™, a software tool that automatically identifies the appropriate process window for solder reflow, and determines the optimal profile more quickly.

The program functions as a built-in expert system for reflow operations using either eutectic solder or lead-free solder. For lead-free applications, which require higher processing temperatures, the Navigator targets the appropriate profile to fit within the smaller process window.

With the Navigator, the decision-making involved in reflow oven setup can now be built into the oven‘s thermal monitoring system and is no longer dependent on operator input. The program eliminates the need for decision-making by operators who may have only minimal training.

KIC Navigator identifies the single optimal profile for each application within seconds, rather than listing and ranking a series of profiles. In addition, the Navigator sets the process window automatically, once an operator identifies the solder paste being used. Drawing on a built-in library of data, the program incorporates specifications for the application into the thermal monitoring process, ensuring that the oven is set in the center of the process window for the most stable profile.

The Navigator is used in conjunction with the new KIC 2000 software platform, and the new SlimKIC™ 2000 Thermal Profiler. The software allows profiles to be viewed on a PC in real time, enabling changes to be made immediately, and may be run on the same PC as the process controller.
